After a Visa Refusal: How to Explain

Writing a strong explanation or reapplication after a previous refusal.

If you were refused before

Many applicants get a visa on a second try after addressing the reasons for the first refusal. A clear, honest explanation helps.

Step 1: Understand the refusal

  • Read the refusal letter carefully. It often states the reason (e.g. not satisfied you will leave, insufficient funds, missing documents).
  • Do not ignore the stated reason when you reapply.

Step 2: Address the reason

  • “Will not leave” – strengthen ties to home: job, family, property, studies. Use a Ties to Home Country letter and more proof (employment letter, property docs, family details).
  • “Insufficient funds” – add sponsor or more savings; explain sources; use Proof of Funds Summary and attach bank statements.
  • “Missing document” – if you still cannot provide it, use our Explanation for Missing Document template and give alternative evidence.

Step 3: Letter of explanation

  • In a Letter of Explanation, briefly state: “I previously applied on [date] and was refused. The reason was [X]. I have now [what you changed]. I am attaching [list new/extra documents].”
  • Be factual and respectful. Do not argue with the previous decision; show what is different this time.

Reapplication

  • Submit a complete application with all required documents plus the new evidence and explanation.
  • If the rules allow, you can reapply as soon as you have the new documents and explanation ready.
