Why proof of funds matters
Visa officers need to see that you (or your sponsor) can pay for the trip: travel, accommodation, and day-to-day expenses, without working in the host country.
What to include in a summary letter
- Your identity – name, passport number, purpose of travel
- Sources of funds – salary, savings, sponsor, scholarship, etc.
- Current position – e.g. “I hold accounts at X bank; my balance as of [date] is approximately Y”
- Declaration – that the funds are yours (or clearly described if from a sponsor) and will be used for the trip
Supporting documents (attach as required)
- Bank statements (3–6 months; stamped if the embassy asks)
- Employment letter and payslips
- Tax returns or business documents if self-employed
- Sponsor letter and sponsor’s bank proof if someone else pays
Common mistakes
- Unexplained large deposits shortly before the application
- Statements that don’t show your name or are not recent
- Claiming funds that are not clearly accessible (e.g. locked deposits without explanation)
