How to Write a Proof of Funds Letter / Summary

Summarising your finances for a visa application.

Why proof of funds matters

Visa officers need to see that you (or your sponsor) can pay for the trip: travel, accommodation, and day-to-day expenses, without working in the host country.

What to include in a summary letter

  • Your identity – name, passport number, purpose of travel
  • Sources of funds – salary, savings, sponsor, scholarship, etc.
  • Current position – e.g. “I hold accounts at X bank; my balance as of [date] is approximately Y”
  • Declaration – that the funds are yours (or clearly described if from a sponsor) and will be used for the trip

Supporting documents (attach as required)

  • Bank statements (3–6 months; stamped if the embassy asks)
  • Employment letter and payslips
  • Tax returns or business documents if self-employed
  • Sponsor letter and sponsor’s bank proof if someone else pays

Common mistakes

  • Unexplained large deposits shortly before the application
  • Statements that don’t show your name or are not recent
  • Claiming funds that are not clearly accessible (e.g. locked deposits without explanation)

Use our Proof of Funds Summary template to write a short, clear letter and attach the documents your destination country asks for.
