Travel medical insurance for Schengen
Schengen visa rules require travel medical insurance with minimum coverage (e.g. €30,000) for the entire stay in the Schengen area.
What the insurance must cover
- Minimum coverage – typically €30,000 for medical emergencies, repatriation, etc.
- Validity – all days you are in the Schengen area (from first entry to last exit)
- Territory – all Schengen countries (or at least the ones you will visit)
- Your name – policy must name you as the insured
What to get
- Many insurers offer “Schengen visa” policies. Compare price and coverage.
- Get a certificate or letter from the insurer stating coverage, dates, and territory in English (or the language of the embassy).
Common mistakes
- Insurance that doesn’t cover the full dates
- Policy that doesn’t explicitly mention Schengen or the required minimum
- Not bringing the insurance certificate to the application
Always check the embassy’s latest requirements; some have additional conditions.
