Why a cover letter helps
A short cover letter ties your application together. It shows the visa officer your purpose, dates, and that you will leave the UK on time.
What to include
- Your details – full name, passport number, nationality, date of birth
- Purpose of visit – tourism, family visit, business (meetings only), etc.
- Travel dates – intended arrival and departure
- Accommodation – where you will stay (hotel, host’s address)
- Funding – who pays (yourself, sponsor) and that you can afford the trip
- Closing – that the information is true and you will comply with visa conditions
Tone and style
- Formal and clear – no slang or casual language
- Factual – match what is in your documents (dates, names, amounts)
- Short – one to two pages is enough; use short paragraphs and bullet points where helpful
Red flags to avoid
- Vague purpose (“sightseeing” with no dates or places)
- Dates that don’t match your itinerary or leave letter
- Mentioning work or study if you are applying as a visitor
