Canada Visitor Visa Checklist: Required Documents

Canada visitor visa (TRV) document checklist. What you need for a complete application.

Canada visitor visa document checklist

A visa document checklist lists every document you need to submit for your application, often grouped as required, recommended, and optional. Using a checklist reduces the risk of missing documents and speeds up processing. Requirements vary by country and visa type. For a Canadian visitor visa (temporary resident visa), you must show that you will leave at the end of your stay and that you have sufficient funds and a clear purpose.

Usually required

  • Valid passport.

  • Application form (e.g. IMM 5257) and supporting forms as required.

  • Passport-size photo (Canada photo specifications).

  • Proof of funds (bank statements, often 4–6 months).

  • Purpose-of-travel or cover letter.

  • Travel itinerary.

  • Proof of accommodation.

  • If employed: employment letter.

  • If visiting family/friends: invitation letter from host in Canada and proof of their status.

Recommended

  • Travel history (previous visas, stamps).

  • Proof of ties to home country.
