Schengen Invitation Letter: Template & Requirements

How to write a Schengen visa invitation letter. Who writes it, what to include, and a template for your host.

What is a Schengen invitation letter?

An invitation letter for a visa is written by your host in the destination country. It confirms that they are inviting you, the dates of your stay, where you will stay, and often that they will support you financially or with accommodation. Many embassies require this for visitor, family, or business visas when you have a host. For Schengen visas, the invitation is often a signed letter from your host in the Schengen area, plus copies of their ID and sometimes proof of address or funds.

What the host should include

  • Full name and contact details of the host.

  • Full name and relationship of the guest.

  • Exact dates of the visit.

  • Where the guest will stay (full address).

  • Whether the host will provide accommodation and/or financial support.

  • A signed and dated statement that the information is true.

Example (excerpt)

I, [Host name], invite [Guest name], my [friend/relative], to stay with me at [address] from [date] to [date]. I will provide accommodation and [optional: financial support]. I have attached a copy of my ID and proof of address.
